Abuta is a climbing, woody vine found in the Amazon region of Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil. The powdered wood is taken in capsules (2 g, 3 times daily) or as tincture (3 mL twice daily). Traditionally, the wood is prepared as a decoction taken at a suggested dosage of 1 cup, 2 to 3 times a day.
Preparations
To prepare a decoction of Abuta, use 2 tsp. of the powdered wood for each 8 oz. of water. In an open ceramic pot, bring water to a boil and then add the powder. Reduce the heat to medium-low and place the lid on the pot. Allow the mixture to simmer for 20 minutes. Pour the mixture through a fine strainer and allow it to cool for a time before drinking. Refrigerate unused portions in a well-sealed container. Since the decoction has an unpleasant taste, other delivery forms are preferred.
