The fronds/leaves and rhizomes of the Avenca fern - also known as the Maidenhair fern - are powdered and can be added to your diet as capsules, tinctures, and infusions. It's a little known fact that Avenca is found in many OTC cough syrups because it is supportive of healthy lungs. That tells you how safe it is!

To prepare an infusion, place 1 tsp. of the powdered leaves in a tea ball or gauze bag and allow it steep in 8 oz. of freshly boiled hot water in a covered pot for 10–15 minutes. Pour the infusion through a fine strainer to remove any sediment and allow it to cool for a time before drinking. If you prefer capsules, most people take one or two capsules a few minutes before meals.

Avenca is non-stimulative and well tolerated - the herb has been approved as a GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) food additive and ingredient in OTC medications for decade. It's a great herb.
